The NDIS can assist participants to live independently. Participants and their families can discuss their home and living goals as part of their planning conversation. A participant’s plan will include the supports the NDIS will fund as well as the supports the participant will need to access through the housing system.
Most participants will continue to access housing in the private market by owning or renting, or through social housing.
NDIS participants are responsible for day-to-day living costs including rent, groceries, utilities, telephone or internet costs. This is the same for general household items such as a bed, fridge or cooking utensils. There are some limited circumstances where the NDIS may make a contribution to these costs.
We want to make it easier for you to talk to us about making changes to your plan.
You have told us that the ways we have been talking about ‘reviews’ is confusing.
As part of changes to the NDIS Act that come into effect from 1 July 2022, we are changing some of the words we use.
As a participants or authorised representative, you have the right to ask us to ‘vary’ or ‘reassess’ your plan.
If you are not happy with your plan, you can still ask us to review our decision.
We will continue to respond to these requests using the legislation and in line with our Participant Service Charter.
If you are not sure which of these words is relevant to your situation, we will talk to you more broadly about your plan and what ‘changes’ you want to make.
Sometimes, you might not need any changes, but just more help to implement your plan.
Other times, we might be able to vary your plan without doing a full reassessment or replacing it with a new one.
In each instance, we will work with you to make those changes and you will receive a letter explaining our decision.
The NDIA is committed to supporting younger participants aged under 65 to have more choice and control over where and how they live.
In September 2020, the Australian Government released the Younger People in Residential Aged Care Strategy 2020-2025 (the YPIRAC Strategy).
The YPIRAC Strategy aims to reduce the number of younger people living in residential aged care, and is designed to give younger people choice and control about where and how they live.
NDIS’s submission calls on all the State Governments to make Australia more inclusive of people with disability, create more opportunities for people with disability, and positively shape the way all Australians live over time.
